
Founded as a Roman city and later became the most important city in the Crown of Aragon only to be overtaken by Valencia, it was taken from Arab domination by the Catalans in 1492. Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination. Barcelona is a transport hub, being one of Europe's principal seaports, an international airport, an extensive motorway network, and a high-speed rail line with links to France and the rest of Europe. Particularly renowned are the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí which has been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
